At least one front row parking spot remained. Meg had worried that the parking situation on Saturday night at Porter’s Seafood would resemble a madhouse. As the oldest family-owned seafood restaurant in continuous operation on the Texas Gulf Coast, Porter’s was legendary. Visitors to Port Provident and residents alike made time in their busy schedules to stop and eat a succulent meal while watching the sun set over the waves. It was a time-honored tradition.

Misgiving after misgiving crowded Meg’s heart and mind about meeting Dan for dinner. So at least getting a good parking spot meant one thing tonight would go right, even if nothing else did.

Meg’s first instinct had been to decline the invitation. But Ellie had overheard Dan’s request and informed her mother that she needed to go.

So, reluctantly, Meg said yes—on one condition. She told Dan she’d meet him at Porter’s. Allowing him to pick her up at Trudy’s felt too much like a date.

The past needed to remain in the past.

She walked through the doors. It felt like a time warp. Dan had taken her to Porter’s for dinner the night he proposed. Meg hadn’t been back since.

How could she have forgotten?

Hard work, that’s how. She’d worked hard to move on with her life and create something she was proud of. Besides raising Ellie, Meg took Barry’s education fund, left Lone Star University behind, and attended culinary school. Afterwards, she’d risen to the level of executive chef at one of Austin’s best boutique hotels until they completed a merger with a national chain a few weeks ago.

She’d built a new life, brick by brick. It took years of hard work and a litany of reminders to never look back.

Walking through the door of Porter’s felt like a tug on a thread that could unravel it all.

“Meg!” Dan smiled and waved from where he’d been talking with a small group of people waiting on a table. He gave one of the men a handshake and a pat on the back as he disengaged from the conversation and made his way across the waiting area.

As he came up to Meg, he started to lean forward, then stopped himself.

She stiffened, then relaxed slightly as she realized she would not be wrapped in the hug that seemed to be coming. Thankfully, whatever Dan had been thinking, he’d thought better of it. This wasn’t a date. This was a co-parenting discussion between two people who shared a child. Ellie deserved their best effort and cooperation.

Meg could do anything, as long as it was for Ellie.

She could sit across from the man who had once held her heart and proposed to her after a meal right under this very roof. She would do it for Ellie.

“Thanks for coming tonight. I thought it would be good if we could talk without Ellie for a little bit. She’s a great kid—but there are some grown-up type conversations it seems like we need to have.”

Meg nodded in agreement. “We do. And she is a great kid.
